Walter Eugene Johnston III. (Born March 3, 1936 in Winston-Salem , North Carolina ; † March 28, 2018 ) was an American politician . Between 1981 and 1983 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Walter Johnston attended the public schools of his home country and then graduated from the Georgia Military Academy in College Park until 1953 . He then studied until 1954 at Duke University in Durham . From 1954 to 1957 he was a soldier in the United States Army . After his military service he continued his education until 1963 at the Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, where he studied law and accounting. After being admitted to the bar, he began working in this profession in Greensboro . Between 1967 and 1980 he mainly dealt with tax law.

Politically, Johnston joined the Republican Party . From 1976 to 1980 he attended their regional party congresses in North Carolina as a delegate. In the 1980 congressional election , he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the sixth constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded L. Richardson Preyer , whom he defeated in the election, on January 3, 1981 . Since he was defeated by the Democrat Charles Robin Britt in 1982 , he could only serve one term in Congress until January 3, 1983 .

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Johnston became chairman of the board of a Greensboro printing company. In 1992 he tried unsuccessfully to nominate his party for the US Senate elections . In the same year he became a board member of the airport administration of Piedmont Triad Airport and withdrew politically. He lived alternately in Greensboro and in Saint Petersburg ( Florida ).
