Jesse Speight (born September 22, 1795 in Greene County , North Carolina , † May 1, 1847 in Columbus , Mississippi ) was an American politician who belonged to both chambers of Congress .

Speight grew up in North Carolina. It was there that his political career began when he was elected to the State House of Representatives in 1820 , of which he was also speaker. He later served in the North Carolina Senate from 1823 to 1827 .

In 1828 he applied for a seat in the US House of Representatives for the Democrats and was successful. Speight was confirmed three times by the voters of the fourth congressional electoral district , before he no longer ran after eight years in office in 1836.

A little later Speight moved to Plymouth ( Lowndes County ) in the state of Mississippi. There, too, he remained politically active and was elected to the State Senate in 1841 , where he remained until 1844. From 1842 to 1843 he was President of the Senate and thus de facto Vice Governor . Finally, after a successful election in 1845, he returned to Congress as a US Senator , where he chaired two committees. However, Jesse Speight died during his tenure in May 1847 in Columbus, where he was buried.
