Anselm Joseph McLaurin (* 26. March 1848 in Brandon , Rankin County , Mississippi ; †  22. December 1909 ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party .

Life

After moving with his parents from Rankin County to Smith County within the state of Mississippi , Anselm McLaurin attended elementary school and the Summerville Institute as a secondary school. During the Civil War , he joined the Confederate troops and earned the rank of captain.

After the war, he continued his education at the Summerville Institute before beginning and successfully completing a law degree. He was inducted into the Bar in 1868 and practiced as a lawyer in Raleigh . From 1871 to 1875 he worked as a district attorney.

McLaurin's political career began in 1879 when he was elected to the Mississippi House of Representatives . In 1888 he was a member of the Electoral College for the Democrats , although its majority elected the Republican Benjamin Harrison as US President . In 1890 he was a delegate to the Mississippi Constitutional Convention.

His first term as a US Senator began on February 7, 1894 , when he took the place of Edward C. Walthall , who had resigned on health grounds . Walthall ran again in the next election, so McLaurin had to leave the Senate on March 3, 1895 again. In the same year he ran for the Democrats in the election for governor of Mississippi and prevailed clearly with 72.1 percent of the vote against Frank Burkett from the Populist Party . He headed the state from 1896 to 1900. In 1900 he then ran for election to a Senate seat, which he also won. From 1901 until his death he represented Mississippi's interests in Washington . From 1908 he was also a member of the Federal Commission for Immigration Issues.
