Henry R. Pease

Henry Roberts Pease (born February 19, 1835 in Winsted , Litchfield County , Connecticut , †  January 2, 1907 in Watertown , South Dakota ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ) who represented the state of Mississippi in the US Senate .

Originally from Connecticut, Pease was trained at a normal school and then worked as a teacher from 1848 to 1859. He then studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1859, after which he began to practice as a lawyer in Washington .

During the Civil War , Pease joined the Union Army and rose to become captain . After the end of the war, he was employed in the state of Louisiana , which was placed under military control, as a superintendent of education . From 1867 he worked in a similar capacity in the state of Mississippi, although the educational measures here initially only applied to the released slaves ; later he took over the post of state superintendent here as well .

After the resignation of US Senator Adelbert Ames , Henry Pease was appointed as his successor. He belonged to the Congress on February 3, 1874 to the March 3, 1875; he did not apply for re-election. Instead, he took over the post of postmaster in the city of Vicksburg in 1875 and worked in the newspaper business as the editor and editor of the Mississippi Educational Journal .

In 1881 Pease moved to Dakota Territory and settled in Watertown. There he worked for the Land Office , an independent government agency responsible for public land . Between 1895 and 1896 he was a member of the South Dakota Senate for a term .
