George Poindexter (* 1779 in Louisa County , Virginia ; †  September 5, 1853 in Jackson , Mississippi ) was an American politician who represented the state of Mississippi in both chambers of the US Congress and also served as its governor .

Despite his only sporadic school education, George Poindexter was later able to begin studying law and was admitted to the bar in 1800. He then worked as a lawyer in Milton in what is now West Virginia .

In 1802 Poindexter moved to Mississippi Territory , where he practiced law in Natchez . A little later he was appointed Attorney General of the Territory ; he was a member of the House of Representatives in 1805. Even before the state of Mississippi was founded, he represented it in three consecutive session periods from 1807 to 1813 as a non-voting delegate in the US House of Representatives .

In 1813 he became district judge of the territory, which he remained until 1817; during this time he served as a soldier in the British-American War . After Mississippi's admission to the Union, Poindexter was elected as a regular member of the House of Representatives in December 1817, where he remained until March 3, 1819. He missed re-election in 1818, as in 1820. As early as 1819 Poindexter had been elected governor of Mississippi as a member of the Democratic-Republican Party ; In 1822 he left this office after a two-year reign.

When US Senator Robert H. Adams died on July 2, 1830, George Poindexter, now a Democrat , was appointed as his successor. He ended Adams' term until March 3, 1835, serving as chairman of several committees; He was also President pro tempore of the Senate from June to November 1834 . He stood for a second term of office , meanwhile changed to the National Republican Party , but failed.

After that Poindexter withdrew from politics. He first lived in Kentucky and worked as a lawyer in Lexington ; he later returned to Mississippi, where he died in 1853.
