Matt Whitaker Ransom (born October 8, 1826 in Warren County , North Carolina , † October 8, 1904 in Garysburg , North Carolina) was a general in the Confederate Army in the American Civil War , who also served as the US Senator for North Carolina.

Before the civil war

Matt Ransom attended private school and later the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill , where he graduated in 1847. After graduating from law and joining the bar, he practiced in Warrenton .

From 1852 until his resignation in 1855, Ransom served as the Attorney General of North Carolina. He was a member of the State House of Representatives from 1858 before being selected as one of three North Carolinas envoys to the Confederate Government in Montgomery in 1861 .

Military and political career

After the civil war began, Ransom joined the Confederate Army . First he served in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel , later he was promoted to Colonel of the 35th Infantry Regiment, which was part of the brigade under the orders of his brother Robert . This rose to major general by the end of the war . On June 13, 1863, Matt Ransom was promoted to brigadier general . He took part in numerous battles and ultimately surrendered at the Battle of Appomattox .

After the war ended, Ransom moved to Weldon , where he worked as a planter and lawyer. In 1872 he was elected to the US Senate in Washington for the Democrats , where North Carolina's Class 2 mandate had previously been vacant since March 1871. After taking office on January 30, 1872, he was confirmed three times and remained in the Senate until March 3, 1895, where he served as its president pro tempore for three days between January 7 and 10, 1895.

After leaving the Senate, Matt Ransom was appointed US Ambassador to Mexico . He held this post for two years and then returned to his Verona estate in North Carolina, where he did some farming before he died in 1904 on his 78th birthday.
