Francis Locke

Francis Locke (born October 31, 1776 in Rowan County , North Carolina , †  January 8, 1823 ibid) was an American politician who represented the state of North Carolina in the US Senate .

Francis Locke was the nephew of Matthew Locke , who served in the United States House of Representatives for North Carolina from 1793 to 1799 . He attended the Zion-Parnassus Academy , a private school, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . He then studied law , was admitted to the bar and began practicing as a lawyer. In 1803 he was elected a judge at the North Carolina Superior Court , which he remained until his resignation in 1814.

Locke resigned as a judge after being elected a U.S. Senator by the North Carolina General Assembly . He took over the seat of David Stone, who had recently resigned, in December 1814 and remained in Congress until he resigned himself on December 5, 1815 . Party affiliation is not recorded. He then withdrew from politics. He died on January 8, 1823 in his home district and was buried in Thyatira Churchyard near Salisbury .
