Marion Butler (born May 20, 1863 in Clinton , North Carolina , †  June 3, 1938 in Takoma Park , Maryland ) was an American politician of the Populist Party . He represented the state of North Carolina in the US Senate .

Life

Marion Butler graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1885 ; He subsequently worked as a teacher for three years before moving to Clinton in 1888, where he was editor and publisher of the Clinton Caucasian newspaper . He stayed that way when he moved to Raleigh in 1894 .

From 1894 to 1895, Butler served as President of the National Farmers' Alliance and Industrial Union . Between 1891 and 1899 he served on the governing body of the University of North Carolina . In 1899 he studied law again and was admitted to the bar.

Marion Butler took his first mandate in 1890 as a member of the North Carolina Senate for the Populist Party, which had not been founded long before. In 1894 he was chairman of their State committee , equivalent to the office of chairman, and was elected to the US Senate. He was a member of Congress from March 4, 1895 to March 3, 1901 and missed re-election.

Butler headed the Executive Committee of the Populist Party from 1896 to 1904. During this time, he held talks with both major US parties about a merger. The differences between the political orientations at the state and federal level became clear: While the populists in North Carolina usually cooperated with the Republicans , the merger with the Democrats was promoted nationwide , which was supported by Butler.

After the political career

Nevertheless, after the Populist Party was absorbed into the Democratic Party, Butler joined the Republicans, for whom he no longer held any public office. Between 1923 and 1924 he helped set up the cotton and tobacco marketing cooperative for the southern states. He worked as a lawyer in Washington well into old age .
