Early years and political advancement

North Carolina Governor

The Democratic Party nominated him for the upcoming gubernatorial elections in 1920. Contrary to the federal trend, where the Republican Warren G. Harding won an impressive election victory in the presidential election, the Democrats, and with it Morrison, managed to win the gubernatorial election. Morrison built his own penitentiary for black youth and reformed the state's state banks. In addition, the road network was further expanded in order to cope with the emerging automobile traffic. The school system was supported by a larger budget. It was also the time when electrification began in North Carolina.

From 1930 to 1932 he was a senator in the US Congress, but was not confirmed in this office in the following elections.
