Nick Galifianakis (born July 22, 1928 in Durham , North Carolina ) is a former American politician . Between 1967 and 1973 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Nick Galifianakis attended the public schools of his home country and then until 1951 Duke University . After a subsequent law degree at the same university and his admission as a lawyer in 1956, he began to work in Durham in this profession. In between he served in the reserves of the United States Marine Corps from 1953 to 1956 . From 1960 to 1962 he commanded a unit in the North Carolina National Guard. Between 1960 and 1967, Galifianakis was an assistant professor of business law at Duke University. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . From 1961 to 1967 he was an MP in the North Carolina House of Representatives .

In the 1966 congressional election , Galifianakis was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fifth constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded Ralph James Scott on January 3, 1967 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1973 . These were shaped by the events of the Vietnam War . Since 1969 he represented the fourth district of his state as the successor to James Carson Gardner .

In 1972 Galifianakis declined to run for the US House of Representatives again. Instead, he ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the US Senate . After leaving Congress, he returned to work as a lawyer; politically it no longer appeared. Today he lives in Durham. Nick Galifianakis is the uncle of actor Zach Galifianakis .
