William M. Robbins
William McKendree Robbins (born October 26, 1828 in Trinity , Randolph County , North Carolina , † May 5, 1905 in Salisbury , North Carolina) was an American politician . Between 1873 and 1879 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .
Career
William Robbins attended Old Trinity College after elementary school and then Randolph-Macon College in Virginia . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1854, he began to work in this profession in Eufaula ( Alabama ). During the Civil War he was a major in an Alabama unit that was part of the Confederate Army .
After the war, Robbins began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He served in the North Carolina Senate in 1868 and 1872 . In the congressional elections of 1872 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of his state , where he succeeded James C. Harper on March 4, 1873 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1879 . From 1875 to 1877 he was chairman of the War Department's Expenditure Control Committee.
In 1894, William Robbins was appointed to the Gettysburg Battlefield Commission by President Grover Cleveland . There Robbins represented the interests of the southern states . He held this position until his death on May 5, 1905 in Salisbury.
