Thomas Gregory Skinner (born January 22, 1842 in Hertford , Perquimans County , North Carolina , †  December 22, 1907 in Baltimore , Maryland ) was an American politician . Between 1883 and 1891 he represented the state of North Carolina twice in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Thomas Skinner was the older brother of Harry Skinner (1855-1929), who also sat in Congress for the State of North Carolina between 1895 and 1899 . He first attended private schools and the Friends Academy in Belvidere . He then graduated from the Horners Military School in Oxford . This was followed by studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . During the Civil War , Skinner was a lieutenant in a North Carolina regiment that was part of the Confederation Army . After completing a law degree and being admitted to the bar in 1868, he began to work in this profession in Hertford.

Politically, Skinner was a member of the Democratic Party . After the death of Congressman Walter F. Pool , he was elected as its successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC at the by-election due for the first seat of North Carolina , where he took up his new mandate on November 20, 1883. After re-election in 1884 , he was initially able to remain in Congress until March 3, 1887. Two years later he managed to get back into the US House of Representatives in the elections of 1888 , where he replaced Louis C. Latham on March 4, 1889 , who had succeeded him in 1887. Since he renounced another candidacy in 1890, Thomas Skinner could only spend one more term in Congress until March 3, 1891.

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Skinner returned to work as a lawyer in Hertford. In 1892 and 1904 he was a delegate to the respective Democratic National Conventions . From 1899 to 1900 he was a member of the North Carolina Senate . Thomas Skinner died on December 22, 1907 in Baltimore and was buried in Hertford.
