Bobby Ray "Bob" Etheridge (born August 7, 1941 in Sampson County , North Carolina ) is an American politician . Between 1997 and 2011 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

After Cleveland School and High School, Bob Etheridge studied at Campbell University in Buies Creek until 1965 . He then continued his studies at North Carolina State University in Raleigh . Between 1965 and 1967 he served in the US Army . Politically, he joined the Democratic Party .

Between 1972 and 1976 Etheridge was County Commissioner in Harnett County ; from 1978 to 1988 he was a member of the House of Representatives from North Carolina . He was then Minister of Education of his state between 1988 and 1996 as Superintendent of Public Instruction . In the 1996 congressional election , Etheridge was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the second constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded David Funderburk on January 3, 1997 . After six re-elections, he was able to complete seven legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 2011 . During his time as a congressman, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan fell . Etheridge served on the Budgets Committee and the Committee on Ways and Means, as well as two sub-committees.

In the 2010 congressional election, he was defeated by Republican Renee Ellmers . This election defeat was in the federal trend in favor of the Republican Party. On February 1, 2011, Governor Beverly Perdue appointed Bob Etheridge to head the North Carolina Office of Economic Recovery and Investment , an agency responsible for distributing state funds under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act . He also grows tobacco and runs a hardware store.
