Joseph Hunter Bryan

Joseph Hunter Bryan (born April 9, 1782 in Martin County , North Carolina , †  December 28, 1839 in La Grange , Tennessee ) was an American politician . Between 1815 and 1819 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joseph Bryan was the older brother of Congressman Henry Hunter Bryan (1786-1835) from Tennessee. Little is known about his youth. At the beginning of the 19th century he began a political career in North Carolina as a member of the Democratic Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson . In 1804 and 1805 and again from 1807 to 1809 he sat as a member of the House of Representatives from North Carolina . Between 1809 and 1817 he also served as the curator of the University of North Carolina .

In the 1814 congressional election , Bryan was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded Willis Alston on March 4, 1815 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1819 . After resigning from the US House of Representatives, Bryan has held no further political office. He died on December 28, 1839 in La Grange.
