Charles Orville Whitley (born January 3, 1927 in Siler City , Chatham County , North Carolina , †  October 27, 2002 in Durham , North Carolina) was an American politician . Between 1977 and 1986 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Whitley attended Siler High School until 1943 and then served in the US Army between 1944 and 1946 during the final stages of World War II . Until 1952 he was still a member of the reserve for this branch of service. After the war, Whitley continued his education by studying at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem . After a subsequent law degree at the same university and his admission as a lawyer in 1950, he began to work in Mount Olive in this profession. Between 1961 and 1967 he was the city's legal representative.

Politically, Whitley was a member of the Democratic Party . From 1971 to 1976 he was on the staff of Congressman David N. Henderson . In the 1976 congressional election he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the third constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded Henderson on January 3, 1977. After four re-elections, he was able to complete almost five full terms in Congress .

In 1986 Whitley declined to run again. He resigned on December 31 of that year, three days before the official end of the legislative period on January 3, 1987. In the following years he worked as a political advisor. Charles Whitley died in Durham on October 27, 2002.
