John Williams Shackelford
John Williams Shackelford (born November 16, 1844 in Richlands , Onslow County , North Carolina , † January 18, 1883 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1881 and 1883 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .
Career
John Shackelford attended public schools in his home country including the Richlands Academy . During the Civil War he was a soldier in the Confederation Army . His rank is indicated differently in the sources. His gravestone indicates his rank as sergeant, while his congressional biography identifies him as a lieutenant.
After the war, Shackelford began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1872 and 1878 he was a member of the House of Representatives from North Carolina ; from 1878 to 1880 he was a member of the State Senate . In the congressional elections of 1880 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded Daniel Lindsay Russell on March 4, 1881 . John Shackelford could not end his legislative term in Congress, which actually ended on March 3, 1883 , because he died on January 18, 1883. He was buried in his native Richlands.
