Alfred Moore Gatlin

Alfred Moore Gatlin (born April 20, 1790 in Edenton , Chowan County , North Carolina , †  February 23, 1841 in Tallahassee , Florida ) was an American politician . Between 1823 and 1825 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Alfred Gatlin enjoyed a good primary school education in New Bern . He then studied until 1808 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . After studying law and becoming a lawyer, he began to work in this profession. Politically, Gatlin became a member of the Democratic Republican Party . When this party split into several wings in the 1820s, he joined the faction around William Harris Crawford .

In the congressional election of 1822 Gatlin was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded Lemuel Sawyer on March 4, 1823 . Since he lost to Sawyer in the following elections, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1825 . There he experienced the turbulent presidential election campaign of 1824 , which was finally decided in Congress.

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Alfred Gatlin withdrew from politics. He died on February 23, 1841 in Tallahassee in what was then Florida .
