Robert B. Vance

Robert Brank Vance (born April 24, 1828 in Asheville , North Carolina , †  November 28, 1899 there ) was an American politician . Between 1873 and 1885 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Robert Vance was a nephew of the congressman of the same name Robert B. Vance (1793-1827). He was also the older brother of Zebulon Baird Vance (1830-1894), who represented the state of North Carolina in both houses of Congress . The younger Vance attended public schools in his home country and then worked in commerce and agriculture. Between 1848 and 1856 he was a court usher. During the Civil War , Vance was an officer in the Confederation Army . In March 1862 his regiment took up position at Cumberland Gap, then accompanied Edmund Kirby Smith's corps to Kentucky , where he took over his brigade on December 30, 1862 after the death of Colonel James E. Rains at the Battle of Murfreesboro . Since 1863 he held the rank of brigadier general .

After the war, Vance began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional elections of 1872 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the re-established eighth constituency of North Carolina , where he took up his new mandate on March 4, 1873. After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1885 . During this time he was chairman of the patent committee several times.

In 1884, Vance was no longer nominated for re-election by his party. Between 1885 and 1889 he worked as Assistant Commissioner for the Federal Patent Office; then he returned to his home state. From 1894 to 1896 he was a member of the House of Representatives from North Carolina . He died on November 28, 1899 in the small town of Alexander near Asheville.
