Alonzo C. Shuford

Alonzo Craig Shuford (born March 1, 1858 in Newton , Catawba County , North Carolina , †  February 8, 1933 in Chapel Hill , North Carolina) was an American politician . Between 1895 and 1899 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Alonzo Shuford attended his home public schools and Newton College . He then worked in agriculture. In 1889 he joined the Farmers' Alliance , a political movement that represented the interests of farmers and was close to the Populist Party , which he also joined. In the years that followed, Shuford worked for his party in many areas. Among other things, he gave speeches on agricultural topics in his home country. In July 1892 he took part in the federal populist party conference in Omaha . He had already been a delegate to a workers' meeting in St. Louis in February of that year . In 1894, he became Vice President of the Farmers' Alliance .

In the 1894 congressional election , Shuford was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the seventh constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded John S. Henderson on March 4, 1895 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1899 . These were shaped in 1898 by the events of the Spanish-American War .

In 1898 Shuford was no longer nominated for re-election by his Populist Party. In the following years he worked in Newton again in agriculture in Newton. In 1924 he was elector for the Progressive Party for Robert La Follette in the presidential election . He retired in 1928, which he spent at Chapel Hill, where he died on February 8, 1933.
