Joseph Winston

Joseph Winston (born June 17, 1746 in Louisa County , Colony of Virginia , †  April 21, 1815 in Germanton , North Carolina ) was an American politician . Between 1793 and 1795 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joseph Winston grew up during the British colonial era. In 1766 he came to what would later become Stokes County in North Carolina. There he took part in some Indian campaigns. In the 1770s he joined the American Revolution . In 1775 he was a delegate to the Hillsboro Convention . In 1777 he was a member of a delegation that signed a treaty with the Cherokee . Winston was a major in the Continental Army during the War of Independence . He took part in some battles.

After the war he began a political career. Between 1790 and 1812 he sat several times in the North Carolina Senate . In the congressional elections of 1792 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in the newly created tenth electoral district of his state, where he took up his new mandate on March 4, 1793. Until March 3, 1795 he could only complete one legislative period in Congress . Joseph Winston died on April 21, 1815 near Germanton. The town of Winston - now part of Winston-Salem - was named after him.
