Alfred Rowland

Alfred Rowland (born February 9, 1844 in Lumberton , Robeson County , North Carolina , †  August 2, 1898 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1887 and 1891 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Alfred Rowland attended public schools in his home country. During the Civil War he was a lieutenant in the Confederation Army . He was captured in the last year of the war, which he spent in Fort Delaware . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1867, he began to work in Lumberton in this profession. In 1867 he was a notary ( Register of Deeds ) in Robeson County. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1876 and 1881 he sat several times as a member of the House of Representatives from North Carolina .

In the congressional election of 1886 Rowland was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the sixth constituency of his state , where he succeeded Risden Tyler Bennett on March 4, 1887 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1891 . In 1890 Rowland renounced another candidacy. In the following years he practiced as a lawyer in Lumberton. He died there on August 2, 1898.
