James C. Harper

James Clarence Harper (born December 6, 1819 in Cumberland County , Pennsylvania , †  January 8, 1890 in Patterson , North Carolina ) was an American politician . Between 1871 and 1873 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1831, James Harper moved with his father to Darke County , Ohio , where he attended public schools. Nine years later, in 1840, he came to Lenoir , North Carolina, where he was a surveyor and engineer, among other things. He also made cotton and other woolen fabrics. In Lenoir, Harper held various local offices. He also became a colonel in the state militia.

Politically, Harper was a member of the Democratic Party . He was a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives in 1865 and 1866 . In the congressional election of 1870 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded Alexander H. Jones on March 4, 1871 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1872, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1873 .

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Harper worked in agriculture and road construction. He died on January 8, 1890 near Patterson.
