David N. Henderson (1973)

David Newton Henderson (born April 16, 1921 in Hubert , Onslow County , North Carolina , †  January 13, 2004 in Wilmington , North Carolina) was an American politician . Between 1961 and 1977 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

David Henderson attended Wallace High School until 1938 and then Davidson College until 1942 . During the Second World War he served between 1942 and 1946 in the Air Corps of the US Army , from which the Air Force later emerged. After a subsequent law degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his admission to the bar in 1949, he began to work in this profession. In 1951 and 1952, Henderson was an advisor to the Education and Labor Committee of Congress . From 1954 to 1958 he was a prosecutor in Duplin County . He then worked as a judge until 1960.

Politically, Henderson was a member of the Democratic Party . In the 1960 congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the third constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded Graham Arthur Barden on January 3, 1961 . After seven re-elections, he was able to complete eight legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1977. Since 1975 he has been chairman of the Postal Committee and the Committee dealing with the Civil Service. During Henderson's time as a congressman, the Vietnam War , the civil rights movement and the Watergate affair fell . In addition, the 23rd , 24th , 25th and 26th amendments were ratified.

In 1976 David Henderson renounced another candidacy. After leaving the US House of Representatives, he withdrew from politics. He died in Wilmington on January 13, 2004.
