Jesse Atherton Bynum

Jesse Atherton Bynum (born May 23, 1797 in Halifax County , North Carolina , †  September 23, 1868 in Alexandria , Louisiana ) was an American politician . Between 1833 and 1841 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jesse Bynum graduated from Princeton College in 1818 and 1819 . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer, he began to work in this profession in Halifax . At the same time he embarked on a political career. From 1823 to 1824 and between 1827 and 1830 he was a member of the House of Representatives from North Carolina . He joined the movement around the future President Andrew Jackson and became a member of the Democratic Party founded by this in 1828 .

In the congressional election of 1832 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the second constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded John Branch on March 4, 1833 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1841 . Until 1837 these were determined by the discussions about the politics of President Jackson. It was about the implementation of the controversial Indian Removal Act , the nullification crisis with the state of South Carolina and the banking policy of the president.

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Jesse Bynum moved to Alexandria, Louisiana, where he worked in agriculture. He died there on September 23, 1868.
