James Gillespie (born around 1747 in Kenansville , Duplin County , Province of North Carolina , †  January 11, 1805 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1793 and 1805 he represented the state of North Carolina twice in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Gillespie received a good education and later participated in the Revolutionary War as a member of the North Carolina Militia . In 1776 he was a member of the North Carolina Constituent Assembly. From 1779 to 1783 he was a member of the House of Representatives from North Carolina ; between 1784 and 1786 he was a member of the State Senate . Politically, Gillespie was an opponent of the federal government under President George Washington ( anti-administration ). He later became a member of the Democratic Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson .

In the congressional election of 1792 Gillespie was elected to the US House of Representatives in the fifth constituency of North Carolina, where he succeeded Nathaniel Macon on March 4, 1793 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1799 . In 1795, the eleventh amendment to the constitution was passed. In the 1802 election , Gillespie was re-elected to Congress in the fourth district, which had since moved from Philadelphia to Washington. He was able to exercise his mandate until his death on January 11, 1805.
