L. Richardson Preyer
Lunsford Richardson Preyer (born January 11, 1919 in Greensboro , North Carolina , † April 3, 2001 ibid) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1969 and 1981 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .
Career
L. Richardson Preyer first attended Woodberry Forest High School and then studied until 1941 at Princeton University . During World War II , he served in the United States Navy from 1941 to 1946 . He was used on destroyers in both the Atlantic and the Pacific. After the war, Preyer studied law at Harvard University until 1949 . In 1953 and 1954 he worked as a city judge; from 1956 to 1961 he was a judge at the North Carolina Superior Court and then until 1963 a federal judge at the United States District Court for the middle district of North Carolina. Politically, Preyer was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1964 he lost in the primary to the nomination for the election of governor of his state to Dan K. Moore . Between 1964 and 1966 he ran the Greensboro branch of the North Carolina National Bank .
In the 1968 congressional election , Preyer was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the sixth constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded Horace R. Kornegay on January 3, 1969 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1981 . During this time, among other things, the end of the Vietnam War and the Watergate affair fell . Between 1977 and 1979, Preyer was Chairman of the Select Committee on Ethics . He was also a member of the Political Assassination Investigation Committee. In 1980 Preyer was defeated by Republican Walter E. Johnston .
After leaving the US House of Representatives, Richardson Preyer withdrew from politics. He died on April 3, 2001 in his hometown of Greensboro. He was the grandson of the inventor Lunsford Richardson, who among other things founded the Vick Chemical Company .
