James E. O'Hara

James Edward O'Hara (born February 26, 1844 in New York City , †  September 15, 1905 in New Bern , North Carolina ) was an American politician . Between 1883 and 1887 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James O'Hara enjoyed a good education. After studying law in North Carolina and at Howard University in Washington, DC and being admitted to the bar in 1873, he began to work in this profession. Before that, he was an administrator for the North Carolina House of Representatives in 1868 and 1869 . Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1872 and 1876 he served as a district administrator in Halifax County ; in 1875 O'Hara was a member of an assembly to revise the state constitution. In 1878 he ran unsuccessfully against William H. Kitchin for Congress . An election contestation did not bring him any success at the time.

In the congressional elections of 1882 O'Hara was then elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the second constituency of North Carolina, where he succeeded Orlando Hubbs on March 4, 1883 . After being re-elected, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1887 . In 1886 he was defeated by the Democrat Furnifold McLendel Simmons . After leaving the US House of Representatives, James O'Hara worked again as a lawyer in New Bern, where he died on September 1, 1905.
