James Stewart (politician)

James Stewart (born November 11, 1775 in Scotland , †  December 29, 1821 in Laurinburg , North Carolina ) was an American politician . Between 1818 and 1819 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Stewart first attended schools in his Scottish homeland. He later emigrated to the United States, where he settled in Richmond County , North Carolina. In his new home he worked in trade and agriculture. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Federalist Party . He was a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives in 1798 and 1799 . Between 1802 and 1804 and again from 1813 to 1815 he was a member of the State Senate .

In a by-election for the seventh seat of North Carolina, Stewart was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he took up his new mandate on January 5, 1818. By March 3, 1819, he ended the current term of his predecessor in Congress . After leaving the US House of Representatives, Stewart resumed his previous activities in commerce and agriculture. He died on December 29, 1821 near Laurinburg.
