Alfred Moore Scales
Alfred Moore Scales (* 26. November 1827 in Reidsville , Rockingham County , North Carolina ; † 9. February 1892 in Greensboro , North Carolina) was a general of the Confederate during the Civil War and the 45th Governor of the State of North Carolina.
Early years
Alfred Scales attended the Caldwell Institute and the University of North Carolina . After studying law, he became a district attorney in Rockingham County in 1852. From 1852 he was politically active for the Democratic Party . In 1852 and again from 1856 to 1857 he was a member of the House of Representatives from North Carolina . He spent the next two years in the US House of Representatives in Washington . In the presidential elections in 1860 he was one of the electors of John C. Breckinridge .
During the Civil War he was a supporter of the southern states for secession . He joined the Confederate Army as a volunteer soldier and made it up to Brigadier General in the course of the war. Scales took part in several battles and was wounded several times. Among other things, he fought in July 1863 at Gettysburg . After the end of the war he applied for an amnesty, which was granted to him in 1866.

After the war, Scales initially worked as a lawyer. From 1866 to 1869 he was again a member of the North Carolina Parliament. In those years the new constitution of the state was drafted. From March 1875 to December 1884 he was again in Congress in Washington. There he was represented in several committees. For the gubernatorial elections of 1884 he was put up by the Democrats as the top candidate.
North Carolina Governor
Scales won the subsequent election and was inducted into office as governor of North Carolina on January 21, 1885. During his four-year term in office, the country's road network was further expanded and improved, and the rail network expanded. Scales also worked to improve the school system.
Old age and death
After his term of office he withdrew from politics. He was elected President of Piedmont Bank in Greensboro. He held this office until his death. Alfred Scales died in 1892. He was married to Kate Henderson, with whom he had one child.
