Henry Toole Clark (born February 7, 1808 in Taraboro , North Carolina , † April 14, 1874 , ibid) was an American politician and the 36th governor of North Carolina.
Early years and political advancement
Henry Clark was the son of Congressman James West Clark . In his youth he attended the George Phillips School, the Louisburg Academy and finally the University of North Carolina , which he graduated in 1832. He then studied law, but without ever practicing a legal profession. In 1840 he became a court clerk. Between 1850 and 1861 he was in the Senate of North Carolina , since 1858 even its President (Speaker). In this capacity he fell to his office after the death of Governor Johm W. Ellis on July 7, 1861.
North Carolina Governor
From the start, his tenure was dominated by the American Civil War . Clark had to recruit soldiers for the Confederate and organize provisions and supplies. It was then that a munitions factory and Confederate prison were established in North Carolina. He found it difficult to come to terms with the new circumstances and was glad when he had reached the end of his term of office.
Further career
After his term of office ended in September 1862, he initially withdrew from politics. After the war he returned to the North Carolina Senate for a term from 1866 to 1867. He died in April 1874. Henry Clark was married to Mary Parker Hargrove. The couple had five children.
