David Stone

David Stone (born February 17, 1770 in Bertie County , Province of North Carolina , †  October 7, 1818 in Raleigh , North Carolina ) was an American politician and the 15th  governor of North Carolina. He also represented this state in both chambers of Congress .

Early years

David Stone attended Windsor Academy and later the College of New Jersey , from which Princeton University emerged . After studying law, he opened a law firm in Halifax in 1790 .

Congressman and Senator

Stone was one of the delegates in North Carolina in 1789 who ratified the US Constitution. Between 1791 and 1794 he was a member of the House of Representatives from North Carolina . He then worked as a judge until 1798. The next step on his career ladder led him to Congress, where he served in the House of Representatives from 1799 to 1801 and then in the Senate until 1807 . In the presidential election of 1800 , which had to be decided by Congress, Stone voted for Thomas Jefferson .

North Carolina Governor

After a short time as a judge in North Carolina, he was elected governor in 1808 to succeed Benjamin Williams and confirmed in this office a year later. His tenure began on December 12, 1808 and ended on December 1, 1810. During his time as governor, he campaigned for the further development of agriculture. At the same time, the country's infrastructure was improved. Progress has been made particularly in the field of transport. Another focus of his tenure was education policy. Stone campaigned for the expansion of the school system.

Another résumé and death

After the end of his tenure, Stone remained politically active. Between 1811 and 1812 he was once again a member of the North Carolina Parliament. From 1813 to 1814 he was once again a member of the US Senate as a representative of the Democratic Republican Party . On December 24, 1814, he resigned from his position and retired to his plantation, where he died in 1818.
