James Turner

James Turner (* 20th December 1766 in Southampton County , Virginia Colony ; † 15. January 1824 in Warren County , North Carolina ) was an American politician and the twelfth Governor of North Carolina. He also represented his state in the US Senate .

Life

Early years

Turner came with his parents from Virginia to what was then the British colony of North Carolina in 1770. The farming family settled in Warren County and young James attended local schools there. During the American War of Independence he fought against the British from 1780 in the ranks of a regiment from North Carolina.

Political career

His political rise began in 1797 when he was elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives . He stayed there until 1800. Between 1801 and 1802 he was in the Senate of his country . In 1802 he was elected Governor of North Carolina by the House of Representatives to succeed Benjamin Williams . However, he owes this election to the fact that the intended candidate had died. In the following two years he was re-elected, which earned him a three-year contiguous term. The constitution did not allow more. During this time, border disputes with the neighboring state of Georgia were discussed and finally settled. Turner advocated a tax-funded education system.

Last years and death

After his tenure, Turner became a US Senator in Congress in Washington, DC He held this position from 1805 to 1816. In Congress, he supported the policies of Presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Madison . In November 1816 he resigned from this office for health reasons. He spent the rest of his life on his Bloomsbury plantation until his death in 1824. James Turner was married three times and had a total of six children. Including their son Daniel , who later became a Congressman from North Carolina.
