Alton Asa Lennon (born August 17, 1906 in Wilmington , North Carolina , † December 28, 1986 ibid) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) who represented the state of North Carolina in both chambers of Congress .
Alton Lennon attended the public schools in his home country and graduated from Wake Forest College in Winston-Salem in 1929 . He then studied law , was inducted into the bar in 1929 and began practicing as a lawyer in Wilmington. From 1934 to 1942 he served as a judge on the New Hanover County Court .
Lennon held his first political mandate from 1947 to 1951 as a member of the North Carolina Senate . On July 10, 1953, he was appointed by Governor William B. Umstead to succeed the late US Senator Willis Smith . He stayed in Washington until November 28, 1954 , trying in vain to get his party's nomination for the official by-election that went to W. Kerr Scott .
