Thomas Kenan

Thomas Kenan (born February 26, 1771 in Kenansville , Duplin County , Province of North Carolina , †  October 22, 1843 in Selma , Alabama ) was an American politician . Between 1805 and 1811 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Thomas Kenan enjoyed a private school education. He later began a political career in North Carolina as a member of the Democratic Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson . Between 1799 and 1803 he was a member of the House of Representatives from North Carolina . In 1804 he was a member of the State Senate . In the 1804 congressional election , Kenan was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fifth constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded James Gillespie on March 4, 1805 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1811 .

In 1810, Thomas Kenan decided not to run again. In 1833 he moved to Selma, Alabama, where he worked as a planter . He also became a member of the Alabama House of Representatives . He died on October 22, 1843 near Selma.
