Bill Hefner

Willie Gathrel "Bill" Hefner (* 11. April 1930 in Elora , Tennessee ; † 2. September 2009 in Huntsville , Alabama ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party , of the state of North Carolina from 1975 to 1999 in the US House of Representatives States represented.

Hefner attended high school in Sardis, Alabama. He then went to the University of Alabama and became president and owner of the WRKB radio station in Kannapolis , North Carolina. He was a member of the Harvesters Quartet, a group of gospel music singers in North Carolina from 1954 to 1967, and made frequent appearances on state television.

In 1974 he was elected to the 94th Congress for the Democrats as representative of the eighth constituency of North Carolina  . He served there for twelve terms from January 3, 1975 through January 3, 1999, when he retired. His predecessor was Earl B. Ruth , his successor Robin Hayes .

Hefner was a well-known lawyer for war veterans. The Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Salisbury , North Carolina was named after him in 1999 .

After serving in Congress, he moved to Alabama with his wife, Nancy. He died there of a brain aneurysm at the age of 79.
