James Carson Gardner (born April 8, 1933 in Rocky Mount , North Carolina ) is a former American politician . Between 1967 and 1969 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Gardner attended the public schools of his home country and then studied at North Carolina State University in Raleigh . Between 1953 and 1955 he was a soldier in the US Army . He later co-founded and from 1962 to 1967 vice president of Hardee's Food Systems Inc. Politically, Gardner joined the Republican Party . In 1965 and 1966 he was its state chairman in North Carolina. In 1964 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress .

In the 1966 congressional elections , Gardner was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded Harold D. Cooley on January 3, 1967 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1968, he could only complete one term in Congress until January 3, 1969. This was determined by the events of the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement .

In 1968, 1972 and 1992 Gardner ran unsuccessfully for the office of governor of North Carolina, where he lost in 1968 and 1992 to the respective Democratic rival candidate; In 1972 he failed in his party's primary elections. Gardner was lieutenant governor of his home state between 1989 and 1993 . He then became president of Rocky Mount-based Gardner Foods Inc.
