Hoyt Patrick Taylor Sr. (born June 11, 1890 in Winton , Hertford County , North Carolina , †  April 12, 1964 in Wadesboro , North Carolina) was an American politician . Between 1949 and 1953 he was lieutenant governor of the state of North Carolina.

Career

Hoyt Taylor attended Winton High School , Horner Military Academy , and Wake Forest College . After studying law and becoming a lawyer, he began working in this profession in Wadesboro. During the First World War he was a first lieutenant in the US Army . For his military achievements he was awarded the Silver Star and the Purple Heart . He also received a commendation from General John J. Pershing . Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party and its district chairman in Anson County . In the meantime, he also served as mayor of the city of Wadesboro. Between 1936 and 1943 he was a member of the North Carolina Senate , where he was a member of the Finance and Budget Committee and has since chaired it. In 1945 he served as the Legislative Assistant to Governor R. Gregg Cherry .

In 1948, Taylor was elected Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina alongside W. Kerr Scott . He held this office between 1949 and 1953. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. In July 1952 he took part as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago . He was particularly concerned about educational issues and economic developments in his home state.

Hoyt Taylor died in Wadesboro on April 12, 1964. He had been married to Inez Wooten since 1923, with whom he had three children. Among them was their son Hoyt Jr. , born in 1924 , who would later also become lieutenant governor of North Carolina.
