Rufus A. Doughton

Rufus A. Doughton (born January 10, 1857 in Alleghany County , North Carolina , †  1946 ) was an American politician . Between 1893 and 1897 he was lieutenant governor of the state of North Carolina.

Career

Rufus Doughton was the older brother of Congressman Robert L. Doughton (1863-1954). He studied at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill , among others . After studying law and becoming a lawyer, he began to work in this profession. His main client was the railroad. Doughton was also active as a farmer and in banking. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . Between 1887 and 1892, from 1909 to 1916, and from 1921 to 1922, he was a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives . In 1891 he was President of this Chamber. In 1912 he took part as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Baltimore , where Woodrow Wilson was nominated as a presidential candidate.

In 1892, Doughton was elected Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina, alongside Elias Carr . He held this office between 1893 and 1897. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . He had two children with his wife, Sue Parks, with their son James Kemp Doughton also becoming a member and president of the state parliament. Rufus Doughton died in 1946 at the age of 91.
