William Bryant Cooper

William Bryant Cooper (born January 22, 1867 in Cool Springs , South Carolina , † November 9, 1959 ibid) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) who was Lieutenant Governor of the state of North Carolina from 1921 to 1925 .

Career

Cooper was the son of Noah Bryant and Lucinda Jennette Cooper. He attended the public schools in Mullins , South Carolina. In 1893 he married Frances Ada Gore. He became a noted banker and businessman in New Hanover County , North Carolina. There he was first a member and later President of the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce . In 1910 he became a member of the Board of Trade . He was also the president of the Masonic Temple Corporation .

He won the 1920 Democratic primary for Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina, beating his rival Fordyce C. Harding . In later parliamentary elections he was able to assert himself against the Republican challenger Irvin B. Tucker and the socialist HC Beuck . According to the constitution of the time, he was not entitled to serve a second term. During this time he was also the President of the Senate in two regular and two special sessions.
