Lynton Yates Ballentine (born April 6, 1899 in Varina , Wake County , North Carolina , †  July 19, 1964 in White Sulfur Springs , West Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1945 and 1949 he was lieutenant governor of the state of North Carolina.

Career

Lynton Ballentine attended his homeland public schools including Holy Springs High School . In 1921 he graduated from Wake Forest College , where he studied economic policy. He then worked on the family's dairy farm. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1926 and 1934 he was a member of the district council in Wake County; from 1937 to 1943 he was a member of the North Carolina Senate .

In 1944, Ballentine was elected lieutenant governor of North Carolina alongside R. Gregg Cherry . He held this office between 1945 and 1949. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. In July 1948 he took part as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia , on which President Harry S. Truman was nominated for re-election. From 1949 until his death, Ballentine was the North Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture . He died on July 19, 1964 in White Sulfur Springs.
