North Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture

The North Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture is one of the constitutional offices of the state of North Carolina . He is head of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services . He also chairs the Board of Agriculture and is a member of the North Carolina Council of State .

The office of Commissioners of Agriculture was created in North Carolina in 1877. Leonidas L. Polk was the first incumbent. At that time the Commissioner of Agriculture was still appointed by the Board of Agriculture. Since 1900, the Commissioner of Agriculture has been elected every four years by the electorate of North Carolina. There is no term limit on how often a person can hold office. Samuel L. Patterson of Caldwell County was the first Commissioner of Agriculture to be elected.

The current incumbent is Steve Troxler .
