North Carolina Commissioner of Insurance

The North Carolina Commissioner of Insurance is one of the constitutional offices of the state of North Carolina . The North Carolina Constitution provides for the election of a Commissioner of Insurance every four years by the electorate of North Carolina whose term coincides with the term of the governor of North Carolina. The North Carolina Commissioner of Insurance regulates insurance in the state, licenses insurance professionals in the state, educates consumers about various types of insurance, and handles consumer complaints. He also oversees the North Carolina Fire Marshal's agency , which is responsible for a variety of other services that affect the daily lives of people in North Carolina. The current incumbent is Mike Causey , who took office in January 2017.

Prior to 1899, supervision of insurance companies in the state was in the hands of the North Carolina Secretary of State . In 1899, the North Carolina General Assembly passed legislation creating the post of Commissioners of Insurance, which has been elected by the electorate of North Carolina since 1908.
