Secretary of State of North Carolina
The Secretary of State of North Carolina is one of the constitutional offices of the State of North Carolina . He oversees the North Carolina Department of the Secretary of State , which oversees many of the state government's economic and business operations. Unlike in many states , the Secretary of State does not oversee state elections.
The post of Secretary of State of North Carolina is the oldest government office in the state of North Carolina after the post of Governor of North Carolina. It was created in 1665 as an archivist for the Province of Carolina . Historically, since American independence in 1776, there has been very low turnover in the Secretary of State of North Carolina. During the first hundred years after the founding of the state, only eight people held the post. William Hill held the post of Secretary of State for 46 consecutive years from 1811 until his death in 1857. During the 20th century , Thad A. Eure broke the record. He held the post from 1936 to 1989 for 53 consecutive years.
From 1776 to 1868 the Secretary of State was elected by the North Carolina General Assembly . Under the North Carolina constitutions of 1868 and 1971, the Secretary of State is elected by the electorate for four years.
