John Bryan Grimes

John Bryan Grimes (born June 3, 1868 in Raleigh , North Carolina , † January 11, 1923 ) was an American Democratic Party politician who was Secretary of State of North Carolina from 1901 until his death in 1923 .

Life

John Bryan Grimes was the eldest of eight children of Major General of the Confederate States Army , Bryan Grimes , and his second wife, Charlotte Emily Bryan Grimes. After attending the Raleigh Male Academy , Trinity School in Chocowinity and Lynch's High School in High Point , he studied at the University of North Carolina and at Bryant & Stratton Business College in Baltimore . He was a farmer and served as a member of the Board of Agriculture between 1899 and 1900 and as president of the North Carolina Tobacco Growers Association . As a member of the Democratic Party , he succeeded Cyrus Thompson as Secretary of State of North Carolina in 1901 and held this post until his death on January 11, 1923, whereupon William N. Everett was his successor. As Secretary of State he was also chairman of the Historical Commission (North Carolina Historical Commission) .

Grimes was married to Mary Octavia Laughinghouse Grimes for the first time since November 14, 1894 and married Elizabeth Forrest Laughinghouse after her death in 1899 in 1904. This second marriage resulted in three sons.
