Charles R. Thomas (politician, 1827)

Charles Randolph Thomas (born February 7, 1827 in Beaufort , North Carolina , †  February 18, 1891 in New Bern , North Carolina) was an American politician . Between 1871 and 1875 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Thomas attended a private school in Hillsboro and then studied until 1849 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1850, he began to work in this profession in Beaufort. He later moved his residence and his law firm to New Bern. In 1861 he was a delegate to a meeting to revise the North Carolina Constitution. Thomas became a member of the Republican Party . In 1864, he became the executive officer of the state government as Secretary of State . In 1867 he was president of the Atlantic & North Carolina Railroad . Between 1868 and 1870 Thomas served as a judge at the Superior Court .

In the congressional election of 1870 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded Joseph Dixon on March 4, 1871 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1875 . In 1874 he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party.

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Charles Thomas practiced as a lawyer in New Bern again. He died there on February 18, 1891. He was the father of the same name Charles R. Thomas (1861-1931), who sat between 1899 and 1911 for the State of North Carolina in Congress.
