Charles A. Jonas

Charles Andrew Jonas (born August 14, 1876 in Lincoln , Lincoln County , North Carolina , †  May 25, 1955 in Charlotte , North Carolina) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1929 and 1931 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Jonas was the father of Congressman Charles R. Jonas (1904–1988). He attended public schools in his home country as well as the Ridge Academy and the Fallston Institute . He then studied until 1902 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . Between 1902 and 1906 he worked as a teacher. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1906, he began practicing this profession in Lincolnnton. Between 1907 and 1910 Jonas was a post holder in this city; he also published a newspaper he had founded there. From 1908 to 1912 he also served as the legal representative of the city of Lincoln.

Politically, Jonas was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1915 and 1919 he was a member of the North Carolina Senate . In 1916, 1932 and 1936 he was a delegate to the Republican National Conventions . From 1917 to 1947 he was also a curator of the University of North Carolina. In 1918 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress . From 1921 to 1925 he served as the assistant federal attorney for the western district of North Carolina. From 1927 to 1929 and again from 1935 to 1937 he was a member of the House of Representatives of his state. He was also a member of the Republican National Committee .

In the 1928 congressional elections , Jonas was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the ninth constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded Alfred L. Bulwinkle on March 4, 1929 . Since he lost to Bulwinkle in 1930, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1931 . In 1932, another congressional candidacy failed. Between 1931 and 1932 he was a federal attorney for the western area of ​​North Carolina. Otherwise he worked as a lawyer. In 1938, Charles Jonas ran for the US Senate without success . In 1942 another congressional candidacy was just as unsuccessful. He died on May 25, 1955 in a Charlotte nursing home and was buried in Lincoln.
