Herbert Covington Bonner
Herbert Covington Bonner (born May 16, 1891 in Washington , North Carolina , † November 7, 1965 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . He represented the state of North Carolina as a member of the US House of Representatives .
Life
Herbert Bonner graduated from the Graham School in Warrenton . During World War I he served in the United States Army . After the war, he first worked as a trader and farmer. He then was the secretary of Congressman Lindsay Carter Warren between 1924 and 1940 . He was then elected to the 76th and 77th Congresses at the same time as a Democrat to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Lindsay Warren. He was re-elected to Congress twelve more times. His term of office ran from November 5, 1940 to November 7, 1965.
During his tenure in Congress, he served on the Election Committee for the Presidency, Vice-Presidency and Congressmen (79th Congress). He was also a member of the Merchant Marine and Fishing Committee (84th to 89th Congress). He was also involved in the constitution of the Southern Manifesto , which spoke out against racial integration in public institutions. Bonner died on November 7, 1965 in Washington DC and was buried in Oakdale Cemetery in his native Washington.
