John Alexander "Alex" McMillan III (born May 9, 1932 in Charlotte , North Carolina ) is an American politician . Between 1985 and 1995 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Alex McMillan attended until 1950, the Woodberry Forest School in Orange ( Virginia ). He then studied history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill until 1954 . From 1954 to 1956 he served in the intelligence service of the United States Army . He then continued his education until 1958 with an economics degree at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville . He then embarked on a business career. From 1970 to 1976 he was CFO of Ruddick Corp. ; then he headed the Harris Teeter supermarket chain from 1977 to 1983 . He was also chairman of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Broadcasting Authority from 1978 to 1983 .

Politically, McMillan joined the Republican Party . From 1972 to 1974 he was a member of the county council in Mecklenburg County . He then headed the committee for social services in this group until 1977. In the 1984 congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the ninth constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded James G. Martin on January 3, 1985 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1995 .

In 1994, Alex McMillan renounced another candidacy. After retiring from the US House of Representatives, he spent three years from 2003 to 2006 faculty member at the military school The Citadel in Charleston ( South Carolina ).
