Sydenham Benoni Alexander

Sydenham Benoni Alexander (born December 8, 1840 near Charlotte , North Carolina , †  June 14, 1921 there ) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1895 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Sydenham Alexander was a cousin of US Vice President Adlai Stevenson (1835-1914) and Senator John Sharp Williams (1854-1932). He first attended schools in Rocky River and Wadesboro . He then studied until 1860 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . During the Civil War he served as an officer in various positions in the Confederation Army . After the war, Alexander began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1879 and 1901 he was a member of the North Carolina Senate . He was also instrumental in founding the North Carolina Agricultural and Mechanical College , of which he later served on the board of trustees. He was also president of the North Carolina Railroad .

In the congressional election of 1890 , Alexander was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded Alfred Rowland on March 4, 1891 . After a re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1895 . In 1894 he decided not to run again. After leaving the US House of Representatives, Alexander retired to his “Enderly Plantation” in Mecklenburg County , which he managed. In 1906 he moved to Charlotte, where he died on June 14, 1921.
