Dempsey Burges

Dempsey Burges (born 1751 in Shiloh , Camden County , Province of North Carolina , †  January 13, 1800 in Camden County, North Carolina ) was an American politician . Between 1795 and 1799 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Not much is known about Dempsey Burges' childhood and adolescence. In the 1770s he joined the American Revolution . From 1775 to 1776 he was a member of the Provincial Congress; then he took part in the War of Independence . He was first with a local unit and later a lieutenant colonel in the Continental Army .

In the 1790s he joined the later President Thomas Jefferson and became a member of the Democratic Republican Party founded by him . In the congressional election of 1794 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in the eighth constituency of North Carolina, where he succeeded Benjamin Williams on March 4, 1795 . After a re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1799 .
